Skilled, Experienced Chimney Sweeps in NJ and PA
Sweeping a chimney removes all creosote and debris, which helps maintain efficient flow of exhaust gases leaving the chimney system. If an excess buildup of creosote and debris occurs, the performance of the chimney may suffer, which may result in poor draft, smoking, exhaust gases backing up into the dwelling, poor efficiency, and potential health and fire hazards. SBCP offers two different types of chimney sweep services in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The amount and severity of the buildup in the flue determines which is the appropriate approach to be the most effective and least invasive:
- A Traditional Sweep is performed using connectable rods and a number of different style brushes. The brushes range from plastic, flexible round wire and flat wire bristles. Manually pushing and pulling the rods up and down causes the bristles to scrub the creosote and debris from the surface of the liner.
- When creosote and/or debris buildup cannot be removed by a Traditional Sweep, a Mechanical Sweep is then required. A Mechanical Sweep is a more aggressive procedure using spinning heads with electric or battery-operated equipment. Depending on the severity of the buildup in the flue, we can use plastic bristle, wire cable or metal chains. Spinning the heads creates friction heat which causes the material to expand, allowing it to be swept off the surface of the chimney liner. In some cases, it can help determine whether the terracotta flue tiles have an air space or were backfilled with cement during original construction. Sometimes you can tell based on sound whether the flue tiles are cracked or intact.
